In The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon, Spyro was given a design overhaul due to the change in game developers from Krome Studios to Étranges Libellules. Light purple spots are dotted along his back to the tip of his tail his tail spade even contains four segments. Spyro's snout resembles that of a crocodile's he has yellow and pink ridges on his back, the first three on his head that are his head crests are tipped in two edges. Spyro is a purple-scaled dragon with equally purple eyes, orange-yellow wings with pink membranes, and a yellow underbelly and tail spike. Jared Pullen's concept treatments of Spyro before finalizing his design for the Legend series Appearance Original Design (2006-2007) He is roughly the same age as in previous games and his character is similar in nature (although this obviously develops with the story and the through the realization of what he is capable of). However, he is nevertheless absolutely recognizable as the character he is. His crest, back ridges, horns and tail fin indicate the strength of his character and that was all very deliberate. John Welsh, producer of A New Beginning in Krome Studios, stated that Spyro as a character had also embodied the same stronger lines, tones and textures that are concurrent and thematic throughout the game.
"There was an arm in the development that insisted at turns that I push Spyro into a much darker, more 'edgier' (and even terrifying) visual space, but in trying to respect the brand and its audience I think I found a middle ground that satisfied". Jared designed Spyro during the development of The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning, keeping the young hero similar to his previous game designs (1998-2005) in appearance. For Jared Pullen, it was about coming up with something that resonated with the modern audience of the time (2006) while not alienating the established Spyro the Dragon fanbase.
